Manadatory Background Screening

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS ARE REQUIRED OF ALL HIRED AND VOLUNTEER COACHES AT SHARKS ICE FACILITIES.

All hired and volunteer hockey coaches must have a current USA Hockey membership and be screened through the California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) screening program prior to coaching. The CAHA online background screening program is performed in partnership with Acxiom Information Security Services (Acxiom). Following initial background checks, CAHA performs screenings of all coaches on a two-year cycle.

All other coaches performing services at Sharks Ice facilities, including skating coaches, are required to have an approved background check, including federal, state and county criminal history and notification of subsequent arrests. Sharks Ice performs its screening program through Employers Investigative Services (EIS).

For more information please contact Jon Gustafson, Vice President of Sharks Ice, by calling (408) 279-6000.

Oakland Bears Hockey

The Oakland Bears Hockey Club is a competitive travel ice hockey organization and one of the oldest operating clubs in California with a focus on long term player development with excellent coaching.  The Bears practice and play at Oakland Ice Center operated by Sharks Ice located in vibrant downtown Oakland. The Teams compete in the Northern California Junior Hockey Association (NORCAL), which is part of the California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA).

Our Travel Hockey A/BB/B teams offer a balance of skill development and competition, with a solid practice and off-ice training program. The Bears program offers the opportunity to participate in a highly competitive league throughout California. Many players in our program have developed to the elite levels and have had the opportunity to move on to AAA youth teams in San Jose, juniors and college ranks across North America playing their youth hockey in Oakland.

Mission Statement

The Oakland Bears Hockey Club is dedicated to provide a fun, fair, and safe atmosphere to foster a lasting love for the game of hockey; to develop an individual both on and off the ice; to create a competitive atmosphere at all age, skill, and dedication levels, and to promote players within the organization and to college hockey and life outside the rink. The Oakland Bears strive to develop a rich community of youth ice hockey players, both male and female, of diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
