2017 Girls' Try Hockey Weekend

Oakland, CA

On October 7th, 2017, the Oakland Bears were a host site for USA Hockey's Girls Give Hockey A Try initiative, in conjunction with the IIHF World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend. The registration table was full with smiles as girls of all ages checked-in and received their first Oakland Bears hockey jersey! Players made their way down to the locker rooms and were greeted by volunteer coaches and staff to help get them suited up and onto the ice.

Players were nervous to touch the ice for the first time in gear, but our standout volunteers were able to help get everyone acclimated to being on the ice, with sticks, pucks, rings, and buckets! As the session went on, the kids and coaches were pulled off the ice to take a FaceTime call from a very important pioneer in the Women's hockey world, Dani Rylan. The Commission and Founder of the National Women's Hockey League, took the time out of her day to setup a chat via FaceTime! While we experienced some technical difficulties, Ms. Rylan was able to see and hear our end of enthusiastic girls, coaches and parents! We'd like to thank her for her time (she was making a big announcement about the new contract between the New Jersey Devils and New York Riveters) and wish her the best of luck to her league (we may have a few future draft picks, too)!
